What is the difference between osteopathy and chiropractic?

  • Definition provided by Medecinenet:

"A system of diagnosis and treatment based on the concept that the nervous system coordinates all of the body's functions, and that disease results from a lack of normal nerve function. Chiropractic employs manipulation and adjustment of body structures, such as the spinal column, so that pressure on nerves coming from the spinal cord due to displacement (subluxation) of a vertebral body may be relieved. Practitioners believe that misalignment and nerve pressure can cause problems not only in the local area, but also at some distance from it. Chiropractic treatment appears to be effective for muscle spasms of the back and neck, tension headaches, and some sorts of leg pain. It may or may not be useful for other ailments."

  • Definition provided by the Association Des Ostéopathes du Québec (ADOQ) :

"Osteopathy is a manual medicine which has the primary therapeutic objective to reinstate the body's mobility and functions by treating the cause of the pain, the symptoms and the functional problems. To do so, the osteopath utilizes the quality and the fineness of his palpation in detecting the position, mobility and quality of the tissues.
The objective of osteopathy is to re-enable the movement of your body structures (bones, articulations, muscle ligaments, external and internal organs, serrated sutures, etc.) which are restricted to enable blood and lymphatic circulation towards improving the metabolic exchanges between your different body systems. This also enables better interrelation and regulation between different systems of the body. To do so, the patient is always treated as a whole.
Osteopathic techniques are numerous and different from one person to another. The osteopath, just as an engineer of the human body, will adapt to each person and will offer a unique, personalized treatment."

  • So what is the difference?

Chiropractic comes from an osteopathic student two centuries ago. So both osteopaths and chiropractors tend to treat similar conditions with similar techniques. In general chiropractors tend to concentrate on the spine for their diagnosis and treatment. Osteopaths always consider the spine but also the muscular and joint systems (visceral, cranial and fascial ...).

What is Reïki?

Reiki is a form of therapy that uses simple hands-on, no-touch, and visualization techniques, with the goal of improving the flow of life energy in a person. Reiki (pronounced ray-key) means "universal life energy" in Japanese, and Reiki practitioners are trained to detect and alleviate problems of energy flow on the physical, emotional, and spiritual level. Reiki touch therapy is used in much the same way to achieve similar effects that traditional massage therapy is used to relieve stress and pain, and to improve the symptoms of various health conditions.
